As we mark over 40 years of MADRE’s work, I’m honored to share just a glimpse of what your support makes possible.
In Sudan, where a brutal war is raging, our partner Fatima Ahmed is doing the unimaginable: leading with strength, resilience, and radical care in the midst of a forgotten humanitarian crisis. As President of Zenab for Women in Development, Fatima has spent decades fighting for the rights of women farmers—women who feed their communities but are too often denied land, credit, and respect.
With MADRE’s partnership, Fatima helped launch the Women Farmers’ Union, reaching thousands of women across Sudan. We’ve witnessed these women increase their income, educate their daughters, and become leaders in their own right. One farmer is now a literacy advocate, a business owner, and a global speaker—proof of what happens when women are resourced and believed in.
But today, everything they’ve built is under siege. As Fatima says, “This war is being fought on women’s bodies.” Their Khartoum headquarters has been destroyed. Sexual violence is being weaponized. Millions are displaced. And yet, they persist. From a temporary office in Gadarif, Fatima’s team is distributing food and dignity kits, providing emergency medical and maternal care, and offering trauma counseling to survivors.
And through it all, MADRE is right there. Not as a distant funder, but as a true partner. That’s what your generosity sustains: enduring, trust-based relationships that save lives and build lasting change.
