MADRE - Global women's rights

As people gather in protest, a woman speaks into a megaphone.
#NoWarInUkraine

MADRE stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We are making emergency grants to frontline women leaders to ensure directly impacted communities have access to food, medicine, and other essential goods and services.

We fund work to meet urgent needs in communities, enhance women's leadership and build strong local institutions.

We strengthen the skills of individuals and organizations to mobilize in communities, influence policies and sustain movements.

We mobilize our team of advocates and lawyers to train and accompany partners in shared campaigns for policy change.

We work with women leaders who protect and provide for communities facing war and disaster. Together, we build skills, strengthen local organizations, advance progressive movements, and advocate for rights.

Afghan Women Aren’t Liberated by Humanitarian Catastrophe

The withdrawal of aid to Afghanistan, as they experience a humanitarian crisis, is an anti-feminist policy choice. Yifat Susskind, MADRE Executive Director, and Jamila Afghani, of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, affirm that the best way for policy makers to ensure an effective economic recovery is to center the voices of Afghan women leaders.

Strengthening International Norms to Ensure Accountability

Wider recognition of gender persecution and a practical understanding of its meaning in conflict and peacetime would be powerful tools in the hands of women’s and LGBTIQ rights activists. With our grassroots partners, we are working together to raise awareness of the international norms on, and understanding of, gender persecution.
