Our hearts are heavy following the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg's contributions helped shape the fight to build a nation free of gender discrimination and a democracy that upheld its promise to treat others with dignity and respect. MADRE mourns the loss of this trailblazer and offers our deepest condolences to her family, friends, law colleagues, and loved ones.
Justice Ginsburg’s death comes at a time marked by social and political upheaval. There is mounting civil and racial unrest; a relentless global pandemic that to date has killed more than 200,000 people in the US; an unstable economy; and raging wildfires that evince the reality of an even larger climate catastrophe.
As we recognize Justice Ginsburg as one of many working to confront and dismantle unjust policies, we know the path forward will not be easy. There is much work to be done in the days and weeks to come to learn from and go beyond the legacy she leaves. We must safeguard our rights; ensure the dignity of all and particularly those targeted by the right, including those who are Black, Indigenous, people of color, LGBTQIA+, women, disabled, and living in poverty; and overhaul unjust policies that harm communities at home and abroad.
Rest in power, Justice Ginsburg. We will continue to carry the torch toward rights and justice.
