Our longtime partner in Nicaragua and a dear friend, Rose Cunningham, has been inaugurated as the first Indigenous woman mayor of Waspam, Nicaragua, her hometown. It’s from there that she’s dedicated her life to protecting and advancing the rights of women and girls – both in that community and around the world.

A few weeks ago, an armed group raided a women’s shelter operated by the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), the only Iraqi organization that has stepped up to meet the critical need for shelter for women at risk of violence. Men armed with assault rifles kidnapped a member of their staff and held him for ransom, and forced OWFI to negotiate for his release. OWFI and other local organizations need protection now for their work meeting the urgent needs of women and girls at risk of violence.

Three organizations announced a petition on Wednesday asking the International Criminal Court (ICC) to bring charges against ISIS for persecuting the people under its control on the basis of gender — including the public execution of men alleged to be gay. The petition is being submitted to the ICC by the New York-based women’s rights group Madre, the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), and City University of New York School of Law. It will be formally presented Wednesday afternoon at an event with ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

A petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding ISIS crimes will be the first of its kind, seeking to advance protection of the rights of women and LGBTIQ people on the international stage. Filed jointly by three non-governmental organizations—MADRE, the Human Rights and Gender Justice (HRGJ) Clinic of the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law, and the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI)—the petition makes the case that the International Criminal Court should prosecute ISIS fighters for crimes they have committed on the basis of gender, including discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

For decades, Colombia's armed conflict has pitted government and right-wing paramilitary groups against anti-government guerrillas. After many previous attempts at negotiating a lasting peace, the Colombian government and FARC, an armed rebel group, finally reached an agreement in 2016. We spoke with Colombian women and girls to find out what peace in Colombia means to them.

One of the major successes of the global women’s movement has been to critically examine the division between the personal and the political, and even to assert its nonexistence. The time has come to tear down yet another wall: the intellectual and political barriers between foreign and domestic policy, just as women tore down those dividing notions of the domestic and public spheres.

In Nicaragua, we work with our local partner Wangki Tangni to end violence against women and to advance women’s rights. One of the ways we do that is by supporting local activists and women’s rights defenders called “promotoras.”
