Yesterday, in one of this administration’s latest assaults on women, the State Department cut all US funding to the UNFPA, a United Nations agency that provides a wide range of lifesaving maternal and reproductive health care worldwide.
This is a major blow. The vast majority of US funding to UNFPA goes to support vital aid for women living in crisis around the world. Like providing health kits to women in Nepal after earthquakes devastated entire communities, delivering urgent aid to women impacted by war and poverty in Sudan, or bringing maternal care to Syrian women living as refugees.
These cuts will deny lifesaving services to women and families living in some of the world’s toughest places who often have no other access to health care. It’s just one in a number of ruthless attacks the Trump administration has launched against vital programs that promote health, peace and human rights.
But with you by our side, MADRE is fighting back. We’re more committed than ever to combat the hostile and heartless policies of the Trump administration and to be there for women and families. For example:
- We are boosting our work with grassroots Syrian women's groups to provide humanitarian aid, including reproductive health care and contraception, to women in Syria and surrounding refugee communities.
- We are expanding a network of escape routes and shelters for women and girls escaping ISIS rape and sexual slavery, ushering survivors to our partner's safe houses and providing them with urgent medical assistance and care.
- We are organizing a shipment of maternal health medicines, surgical supplies, prenatal vitamins, and more to two maternity centers on the remote north coast of Nicaragua.
Your support as a MADRE member makes this and more possible. Thank you for standing with us, especially now as vital protections for women’s rights face growing threats. I’m so grateful to have you by our side.
MADRE Executive Director
