I have great news to share!
Our longtime partner in Nicaragua and a dear friend, Rose Cunningham, has been inaugurated as the first Indigenous woman mayor of Waspam, Nicaragua, her hometown. It’s from there that she’s dedicated her life to protecting and advancing the rights of women and girls – both in that community and around the world.
When women lead, whole communities benefit. And when Rose leads, let me tell you, I have seen people transformed. Through her vision and guidance as the head of MADRE’s partner organization Wangki Tangni, she has organized thousands of women to demand rights and to protect each other from abuse and injustice.
MADRE is honored to support the visionary leadership of women like Rose. On the occasion of her inauguration, we’re sending her the message of congratulations below.

Dear Rose,
You have made history: the first Indigenous woman to be inaugurated as mayor of your territory of Waspam.
You’ve said that, until recently, Indigenous women were invisible. But no more – thanks to you and to all the brave women in your community who have stood up for their rights.
As a women’s rights activist and longtime MADRE partner, we know well your tireless work to protect the rights of women and girls in your community and around the world. We’ve been proud to partner with you to bring tools and training to women farmers, to shield women and girls from abuse and trafficking, to bring Indigenous women’s voices to policy spaces at home in Nicaragua and on the international stage, and so much more.
Rose, you are an inspiration, and we congratulate you on behalf of every woman who has ever wondered about stepping into leadership – and who has made that leap.
We honor you in the name of every girl in your community who sees you as an example she might follow – and who will know that she has a champion in the mayor’s office to defend her rights.
And we pledge to stand with you as you bring your vision – of rights and justice for all – to life.

Nuestra compañera de muchos años en Nicaragua y una querida amiga, Rose Cunningham, ha sido inaugurada como la primera alcaldesa indígena de Waspam, Nicaragua, su ciudad natal. Es desde ahí donde ella dedicó su vida a proteger y promover los derechos de las mujeres y las niñas, tanto en esa comunidad como en todo el mundo.
Cuando las mujeres lideran, comunidades enteras se benefician. Y cuando Rose lidera, déjame decirte, he visto personas transformadas. A través de su visión y guía como directora de la organización socia de MADRE, Wangki Tangni, ha organizado a miles de mujeres para exigir derechos y protegerse mutuamente del abuso y la injusticia.

Querida Rose,
Has hecho historia: la primera mujer indígena que se inaugurará como alcalde de tu territorio de Waspam.
Tu has dicho que, hasta hace poco, las mujeres indígenas eran invisibles. Pero no más, gracias a ti y a todas las valientes mujeres de tu comunidad que han defendido sus derechos.
Como activista por los derechos de las mujeres y antigua socia de MADRE, conocemos muy bien tu incansable trabajo para proteger los derechos de las mujeres y las niñas en tu comunidad y en todo el mundo. Nos sentimos orgullosas de asociarnos contigo para brindar herramientas y capacitación a mujeres agricultoras, para proteger a mujeres y niñas contra el abuso y la trata de personas, llevar las voces de las mujeres indígenas a espacios políticos en Nicaragua y en el escenario internacional, y mucho más .
Rose, eres una inspiración, y te felicitamos en nombre de todas las mujeres que alguna vez se han preguntado acerca de entrar en posiciones de liderazgo, y quiénes han dado ese salto.
Te honramos en nombre de todas las niñas de tu comunidad que te ven como un ejemplo que podrían seguir, y quienes sabrán que tienen una campeona como alcaldesa para defender sus derechos.
Y nos comprometemos a estar de pie junto contigo a la hora de llevar tu visión- de derechos y justicia para todos- a la vida.
