Afro-Descendant and Indigenous organizations in Colombia have issued an urgent call for solidarity at this critical moment in Colombia’s peace implementation process. After consultation with our Colombian partner organization Black Communities Process (Proceso de Comunidades Negras), the co-sponsoring organizations below are distributing the attached open letter, which we invite you to sign.
While the end of armed conflict between the government and FARC represents a key milestone, the manner in which Colombia’s government is implementing “peace” threatens the lives, wellbeing, and territorial rights of Afro-Colombian and Indigenous Peoples. Just last week, the Guardia Cimarrona, or Afro-Colombian traditional security force, in Santander de Quilichao received death threats for acting to halt illegal mining in their territory. Please join with the co-sponsoring organizations listed below by signing and distributing this open letter. It calls on Colombia’s government to meaningfully consult with Afro-Colombian and Indigenous authorities and organizations, including women’s organizations, in all aspects of peace implementation. Después de consultar con nuestra organización compañera Colombiana, Procesos de Comunidades Negras, las organizaciones co-promotoras alistadas abajo están distribuyendo la carta abierta adjunta, y les invitamos a firmarla.
Mientras el final del conflicto armado entre el gobierno y las FARC representa un hito clave, la manera en que el gobierno colombiano está implementando la "paz" amenaza las vidas, el bienestar y los derechos territoriales de los Pueblos Afrocolombianos e Indígenas. La semana pasada, la Guardia Cimarrona, la fuerza de seguridad tradicional Afrocolombiana, en Santander de Quilichao recibió amenazas de muerte por actuar para detener la minería ilegal en su territorio. Por favor, únase con las organizaciones co-promotoras alistadas debajo de este mensaje, y firme y distribuya la carta abierta. La carta le pide al gobierno de Colombia que consulte con las autoridades y organizaciones Afrocolombianas e Indígenas, incluidas las organizaciones de mujeres, en todos los aspectos de la implementación de la paz.
