MADRE Mourns the Passing of Michael Ratner (1943-2016)

Our movements for social justice, for human rights and for international rule of law have lost a leading advocate with the passing of Michael Ratner.

He was a social justice lawyer, an activist, president emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights and a defender for survivors of rights violations and abuses worldwide. In his decades of work and leadership with CCR, he brought cases to redress the most entrenched abuses and fought to hold violators accountable, no matter how powerful.

He stood against the US' indefinite detention of people held at Guantanamo, organizing hundreds of lawyers nationwide, going all the way to the US Supreme Court – and winning. He turned to international courts to hold US officials accountable for torture. Time and again, he mobilized the law to serve justice and to protect people.

We count ourselves lucky to have been among the many who benefited from Michael's brilliant guidance and steadfast support. Thank you for everything, Michael.
