On March 16, 2022, MADRE hosted a panel to discuss accountability for gender-based crimes, with a particular focus on gender persecution - what it is and what forms it takes in specific contexts - and a new initiative to advance accountability for gender persecution.
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) Prosecutor announced the development of a new policy paper to advance accountability for gender persecution. This policy paper will guide the ICC’s approach to gender justice – a truly groundbreaking opportunity for clarity on a topic that has been overlooked for too long.
This is our moment to reaffirm that targeting women and LGBTIQ, non-binary, and gender non-conforming persons in peacetime and conflict can amount to a crime against humanity. By better understanding how and when gender persecution occurs, we can strengthen accountability and meaningfully include survivors in building sustainable peace.
