Join MADRE’s Voyages with a Vision delegation to Peru
We are pleased to invite you to be part of MADRE's Voyage with a Vision delegation to Peru from February 5-12, 2005. Voyages with a Vision delegations are just one part of MADRE's programs in Peru, which support the struggle of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-Peruvians through human rights trainings and cultural programs for women and youth.
PERU TRIP DETAILS
Participate in a convergence of cultures during Carnival and meet with community organizers and youth activists in Ayacucho and Lima who are struggling for the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-Peruvians.
MADRE's February 2005 Peru delegation will be spent in mostly rural Ayacucho, home to many of Peru's Indigenous communities, and Lima, Peru's capital city. In Ayacucho, we will learn about the celebration of Carnival in Indigenous communities and have a chance to participate in Carnival activities! We will meet with MADRE's sister organization, CHIRAPAQ, which advocates for Indigenous Peoples' rights, to discuss issues facing Indigenous women and youth in the region, such as ongoing racism and discrimination, high levels of unemployment, and Bush's "global gag rule," which poses serious threats to women's sexual and reproductive health. We will meet with community leaders and Indigenous activists about the impact of globalization on Indigenous communities and cultures in Peru, the struggle for land rights, and limited opportunities for young people in the face of increasing attacks on Indigenous Peoples' rights and resources. We will also have a special opportunity to visit with producers and listeners of Voices for Justice: Human Rights Radio. Voices for Justice is a bilingual (Spanish/Quechua) radio program that trains Indigenous women and youth in radio production and provides a forum for Indigenous communities throughout the region of Ayacucho to exchange information about topics such as Indigenous rights, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and women's political participation.
In Lima, we will meet with youth activists of LUNDU, a MADRE sister organization that works with Afro-Peruvian youth to raise awareness about racial and gender discrimination, advocate for their political participation at different levels within Peruvian society, and explore and strengthen understandings of Afro-Peruvian cultural identity. We will learn about issues facing Afro-Peruvian women and youth in Lima and its surrounding areas, such as racism, HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive rights, literacy, unemployment, and drug use. We will also have a chance to meet with some of the young people who participate in LUNDU's innovative human rights trainings and arts workshops, and attend a special cultural presentation of their work.
And, of course, we will leave plenty of time for you to experience Ayacucho and Lima and shop in local markets!
