We are pleased to invite you to be part of MADRE's Voyage with a Vision delegation to Peru from March 18-25, 2006. MADRE's delegations offer a chance to visit the communities of our sister organizations and learn from MADRE's partners about their work for human rights and social justice.
TRIP OVERVIEW
Over the past year, Indigenous and social justice movements have gained great momentum and influence throughout Latin America, exhibiting a fierce resistance to US-backed economic policies and the militarization and corporate takeover of Indigenous lands. MADRE's delegation to Peru provides an opportunity to meet with Indigenous women and Afro-Peruvian youth activists working at local, national, and international levels about how their own human rights struggles relate to the region's burgeoning movements.
On the trip, we'll travel to Ayacucho, the primarily rural and mountainous region that's home to many of Peru's Indigenous communities and Lima, Peru's capital city. In Ayacucho, we'll meet with MADRE's partners about their work for Indigenous women's and youth rights, including programs to promote food security, sustainable development, sexual rights and reproductive rights, and children's education. Community leaders and Indigenous activists will speak to us about the impact of globalization on Indigenous communities and cultures and discuss community-based strategies for confronting destructive, US-backed economic policies. We will also have a special opportunity to visit with producers and listeners of Voices for Justice: Human Rights Radio, a bilingual (Spanish/Quechua) radio program that trains Indigenous women and youth in radio production and provides a forum for Indigenous communities throughout the region of Ayacucho to exchange information about topics such as Indigenous rights, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and women's political participation.
In Lima, we'll meet with members of an Afro-Peruvian youth-led organization that advocates for the rights of Afro-Peruvians and offers creative avenues for young people to challenge racism and sexism in Peruvian society. They'll share their experiences in movement-building with African-descent youth throughout the Americas, and discuss how they're addressing issues faced by Afro-Peruvian women and youth such as discrimination, HIV/AIDS, sexual health and reproductive health, literacy, and unemployment. As a special send-off, we'll attend a cultural presentation by participants from the group's innovative arts workshops and human rights trainings.
And, of course, we will leave plenty of time for you to experience Ayacucho and Lima and shop in local markets!
