MADRE's Sister Organizations in Cuba

Federation of Cuban Women

The Cuban Constitution is one of the only constitutions in the world that guarantees equal economic, social and political rights for women. The Federation of Cuban Women works to make this ideal a reality. It is the largest women's organization in Cuba, with a membership of 3.8 million women-85 percent of women over 14. The Federation is in charge of directing the National Commission for Preventing Violence Against Women and works to ensure that promoting gender equity is a central aspect of Cuba's educational and social programs. The Federation advises the government on issues relating to women and sends volunteer social workers into communities to address women's needs.

The Federation of Cuban Women is also very active in the international arena. Through it, Cuban women participate in international conferences and establish alliances with women around the world.

The Cuban Red Cross

The Cuban Red Cross maintains an overview of Cuba's medicines and medical supplies and distributes medical donations where they are most needed. Working to alleviate shortages caused by the US embargo, the Cuban Red Cross connects donors with hospitals and clinics around Cuba in order to distribute medical donations as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The Cuban Red Cross also responds to natural disasters in Cuba, helping to meet the needs of the Cuban population under extraordinary circumstances.
