Crisis in Sudan

September 2004

Since last March, tens of thousands of men, women and children have been murdered and over one million left homeless by the marauding Janjaweed militias. Those who have managed to survive are threatened by starvation and disease. Over 300,000 people will die by year's end if emergency action is not taken immediately. Please help MADRE respond to their urgent plea for help.

The United Nations has called the situation in Sudan the "world's worst humanitarian crisis". When the Janjaweed attack, they burn down whole villages, destroy food crops and poison wells. Men are hunted down and murdered and women and girls are systematically raped and mutilated. The death toll is now 1,000 people a day.

Today, thousands of traumatized, homeless families are wandering in Darfur. It is too dangerous for them to return to their charred villages, but they have no place else to go. Women who have survived rape and sexual mutilation are in urgent need of treatment, with nowhere to turn. To many women, their own wounds seem less critical than the hunger and illnesses that plague their children. With every passing day, more children are dying from diarrhea, dysentery and respiratory infections.

MADRE is working with a network of community-based organizations in Sudan to facilitate a broad-based relief effort in communities throughout Darfur. With your support, MADRE will help provide emergency aid to the women and children in Sudan who need it the most, including:

  • life-saving medicines to women and children whose villages have been destroyed by militias;
  • emergency shelter, including plastic sheeting and mosquito nets;
  • survival kits for families who have fled their homes with no possessions, including cups, plates, a cooking pot, a water container, a basin and soap; and
  • trauma counseling for children who have witnessed atrocities.
