"Voices for Justice" in Peru:
How You Can Help

Ongoing wars during the 1980's and 90's claimed the lives of nearly 70,000 people in Peru and forced more than 600,000 Peruvians from their homes. Tens of thousands of women were the targets of sustained and violent sexual assault, including systematic rape.

When the women who hold families together are subjected to rape on a massive scale, it rips apart the social fabric of families and entire communities. This is the legacy of the war in Peru.

It is estimated that three out of every four people killed during Peru's war were from Ayacucho. In this region, more than half of the population is chronically malnourished and most women work in the fields as many as 17 hours per day to try to feed their families. CHIRAPAQ (Center for Indigenous Culture of Peru) is working to change these conditions.

MADRE supports CHIRAPAQ's work through "Voices for Justice", a human rights radio program that disseminates life-saving information about health care, legal rights and violence protection. In a rural area where few can read and many lack access to education, this program provides thousands of women with information that they cannot get anywhere else.
