NEW! MADRE's sister organization, the Umoja Uaso Women's Group in Kenya, was featured in the May issue of O, the Oprah Magazine. The story, titled "A Most Amazing Village," provides a view into the work for social change that we do together.
MADRE's media program helps educate people in the US about the impact of government policies at home and abroad, and provides concrete ways to support women's human rights. What is MADRE?
MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's groups worldwide.
Why is MADRE a unique resource for media?
- Because MADRE works simultaneously in marginalized communities around the world and in advocacy arenas, our reports and analysis reflect the stories and perspectives of women directly affected by war, poverty, and natural disasters and the expertise of women who are working to create lasting solutions to these crises.
- MADRE's 22 years of hands-on experience in communities, together with our work to improve policy at the national and international levels, is the foundation of MADRE's extensive expertise on a range of key foreign policy and human issues.
- MADRE also facilitates an international network of women human rights experts who are available to speak to the media.
Who are MADRE's partners?
The women of MADRE's sister organizations are those for whom the most horrifying newspaper headlines are a daily lived reality. They are survivors of war, political repression, genocide, economic and sexual exploitation, and the twin burdens of natural disaster and disastrous policies. Refusing to give into despair, they have organized with MADRE to build health clinics, nutrition programs, domestic violence shelters, community radio stations, human rights training centers, literacy campaigns, and programs to promote women's leadership and political participation.
MADRE currently works in:
Africa (Kenya, Rwanda, and Sudan); Latin America and the Caribbean (Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru); and the Middle East (Iraq and Palestine).
