MADRE for Media
What is MADRE?
MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's groups worldwide.
Why is MADRE a unique resource for media?
- Because MADRE works simultaneously in marginalized communities around the world and in advocacy arenas, our reports and analysis reflect the stories and perspectives of women directly affected by war, poverty, and natural disasters and the expertise of women who are working to create lasting solutions to these crises.
- MADRE's 23 years of hands-on experience in communities, together with our work to improve policy at the national and international levels, is the foundation of MADRE's extensive expertise on a range of key foreign policy and human issues.
- MADRE also facilitates an international network of women human rights experts who are available to speak to the media.
Who are MADRE's partners?
The women of MADRE's sister organizations are those for whom the most horrifying newspaper headlines are a daily lived reality. They are survivors of war, political repression, genocide, economic and sexual exploitation, and the twin burdens of natural disaster and disastrous policies. Refusing to give into despair, they have organized with MADRE to build health clinics, nutrition programs, domestic violence shelters, community radio stations, human rights training centers, literacy campaigns, and programs to promote women's leadership and political participation.
MADRE currently works in:
Africa (Kenya, Rwanda, and Sudan); Asia (Sri Lanka); Latin America and the Caribbean (Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru); and the Middle East (Iraq and Palestine).
MADRE currently works on:
Armed conflict and forced displacement; women's health and reproductive rights; global economic issues; community development; Indigenous Peoples' rights and resources; food security and sustainable development; human rights advocacy and the United Nations; youth rights; and US foreign policy.
MADRE has been featured in print and on-line media, radio, and television, including:
CNN, CNBC, BBC, National Public Radio, Pacifica Radio, Ms. Magazine, The Progressive, Working Mother, Glamour Magazine, New York Newsday, New York's Daily News, Foreign Policy in Focus, Common Dreams, TomPaine.com, The Gay Financial Network, and other outlets nationwide.
