Providing Tents for an Orphanage and a Women's Health Clinic in Haiti
Posted on: Wednesday, February 24, 2010
MADRE is working with the Feminist Solidarity Camp (a international network of women's rights organizations) to distribute supplies to women, children and families in Haiti.
In Carrefour, a poor, mostly residential district in the greater metropolitain area of Port-au-Prince, our team distributed tents for the orphans from "Service aux Enfants en Difficulte." The orphanage was destroyed during the earthquake, and the 42 girls and boys had been sleeping on the ground. With the rainy season coming, it was urgent that they have some type of shelter. In addition to the tents, we provided sleeping bags, plates, cups and eating utensils. Our team reported that the children were very excited to be getting the supplies.
Klinik Fanm, a clinic that MADRE partnered with our sister organization SOFA to build during the 1990s, was the first women's health clinic in Haiti. The clinic is located just outside of Port-au-Prince, and fortunately didn't sustain too much damage during the quake. Immediately following the earthquake, the clinic became an improvised community shelter as people began congregating in the clinic's large back yard. Through the Feminist Solidarity Camp, we've been able to supply the clinic tents, medicine and supplies, including food, clothes and cookware.
