MADRE works with our long-time sister organization Wangki Tangni on the North Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, where three-quarters of the population suffers from malnutrition. Together we implement Harvesting Hope, a project that provides families with organic vegetable seeds, coordinates a seed bank, trains Indigenous Miskita women in organic farming, and organizes farmers' markets. The project emphasizes sustainable land use methodologies, safeguards traditional Indigenous knowledge of natural resource management, and strengthens women's economic self-sufficiency and participation in public life.

MADRE and Wangki Tangni provided organic seeds to 80 individuals for family gardens in Kisalaya, Miguel Bikan, Bawisa, and Waspam, and to 33 communal gardens along the upper and lower Coco River. In remote areas, seeds were distributed by leaders of local women's associations. In total, approximately 1,100 people (participants and family members) benefitted from the distribution of organic seeds.

In addition to providing seeds, MADRE and Wangki Tangni provided ongoing trainings on organic soil preparation, fertilization, and pest control, as well as women's rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights, violence, collective rights, and their relationship to the economic, social, and environmental struggles participants face. We also coordinated three farmers' markets, enabling 25 women to sell their surplus produce and exchange information with other farmers.
