Help Us Stop Cholera in Haiti
Posted on: Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Our sisters in Haiti are faced with a new horror: cholera, an infection that breeds in unsanitary, crowded conditions and can be fatal within a few hours. It has now spread to the capital, Port-au-Prince, where thousands live in displacement camps.
Lack of basic sanitation and clean water in these teeming tent cities means the disease could tear through this area where thousands of people—already in fragile health—could quickly die.
Fortunately, cholera is relatively simple to stop and prevent, but only if we act fast.
Cholera can be treated easily and cheaply with a solution of clean water and simple salt and sugar. The spread of the disease can be prevented by frequent hand washing and drinking purified water.
Please make a tax-deductible gift of $35, $50, $100 or as much as you can afford right away!
Your generous donation today will be instantly put to work to set up treatment centers, purchase water purification tablets, distribute soap and disinfectants and educate women and families about how to prevent infection.
Our sister organization, KOFAVIV, is already in the camps and poised to use its community networks to raise awareness and distribute emergency supplies. If treated quickly, cholera has a very low mortality rate – but we must get resources in the hands of our sisters today.
MADRE supporters saved lives after the earthquake, and helped women care for their families and begin to heal. They have already survived an earthquake, but an unchecked epidemic could take away what they--and you--have worked so hard to rebuild. Please make a tax-deductible gift right now of $35, $50, $100 or as much as you can afford.
Vivian Stromberg, Executive Director
P.S. We will keep you updated on this epidemic as well as our ongoing work to help our sisters combat the terrible epidemic of sexual violence already raging through the camps.
