Determining Long-Term Health Care Needs for Women in Haiti
Posted on: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
MADRE is continuing to partner with Circle of Health International (COHI) to support women's health volunteer teams in Fonds Parisien, Haiti.
The teams are working to build and maintain a stable, sustainable response to women's health needs in the aftermath of the crisis. The volunteers, with a team of 15 Haitian women who were trained to assist, completed an assessment of women's health needs in the Fonds Parisien area.
The questionnaire was administered to 64 women between the ages of 15-50, all of whom are currently residing in the local camp for displaced peoples, and covered the topics of healthcare, safety, food, water and hygiene. The results of the survey have inspired new aid initiatives in the camp. Because of the results of the survey, members of our volunteer teams knew to provide a lactation counseling session for pregnant mothers. The results of the survey will be an extremely important part of determining what kind of long-term relief organizations should provide.
Maternity care is one of the biggest needs identified by the survey, and the women's health volunteers are working to meet these needs, with the help of the clinic's newest staff members, two local midwives. Since the midwives arrived at the clinic, they have been busy setting up schedules for prenatal and postpartum care, providing referrals for advanced level care and attending births at the clinic.
