Montclair, New Jersey may be thousands of miles away from Guatemala City, but Nonna Pekarev, owner of La Belle Vie Salon & Spa on Fairfield Street, is reaching across the distance. She has joined Montclair resident Yifat Susskind, Executive Director of the international women’s human rights organization MADRE, to launch a new campaign to help women in Guatemala address domestic violence and build a path out of poverty.
Nonna and Yifat invite you to celebrate the launch of "Sister Salons for Guatemala." The project aims to enable women in Guatemala to open their own hair salon, where they can receive job training and domestic violence counseling.
Years ago, Nonna immigrated to Montclair and opened her own hair salon, which has become a mainstay of the community. Now, Nonna is determined to share the support and generosity she has experienced in Montclair with struggling women in Guatemala. She is partnering with MADRE, which works in support of local women’s groups in Guatemala and worldwide.
The relationship between Montclair's La Belle Vie Salon and MADRE on behalf of the women of Guatemala is a partnership in the truest sense of the word – two women entrepreneurs from Montclair reaching out to women building a new future for themselves in Guatemala City.
Join Nonna Pekarev and Yifat Susskind on Wednesday, October 12 from 6pm to 10pm to celebrate the launch of Sister Salons for Guatemala and to speak with them about the project.
When: Wednesday, October 12
Time: 6 pm-10 pm
Location: La Belle Vie Salon & Spa, 46 Fairfield Street, Montclair, NJ
