Dear Yanar and our friends at OWFI,
On behalf of MADRE, we would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to you on the third year anniversary of the Al Mousawat radio project!
This three year anniversary marks an important success for the women’s rights movement as a whole. Despite rising sexual violence and subordination, ongoing gender and social inequality in Iraq, the women of OWFI refuse to be defeated. Instead, you have created effective strategies like the Al Mousawat radio project to defend women’s rights and empower women to demand their human rights. Your use of this effective medium of activism to reach out to even the most isolated women in Iraq is inspiring.
The Al Mousawat broadcast does more than provide an alternative to oppressive fundamentalist media; it broadcasts the powerful message to the Iraqi women who are listening that they are not alone.
The visibility you generate for the women’s movement, both with the Al Mousawat radio project and with your multi-faceted approach to addressing social injustice, is an inspiration to MADRE. Your tireless hard work and dedication to the cause of women’s rights continues to set a shining example for the rest of the world. We support you and are honored to work with you.
