Honoring Our Partners on International Women's Day

On March 8, 2010, women around the world celebrate the one hundredth International Women’s Day.
MADRE recognizes the many women who have made - and continue to make - vital contributions to the women's movement. We especially recognize the work of our partners around the world who work at the community level every single day to make the goals of the women's movement a reality.
In Haiti, the women's movement is honoring the lives of three feminist Haitian leaders who died during the January earthquake. During the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a number of women’s rights organizations will hold a roundtable to discuss humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti and how to ensure gender responsiveness in these efforts. In Haiti, the main activity will take place that day in Plaza Catherine Flon in Champ de Mars in the center of Port au Prince, a park that symbolizes Haitian women’s participation to the war towards independence two centuries ago. This year, on March 8th, our partner from CHIRAPAQ, Tarcila Rivera Zea, is being awarded the Women's Order of Merit by the Ministry of Women and Social Development in Peru for her commitment to the empowerment of Indigenous women and Peoples in Peru. We congratulate Tarcila for this achievement, and we are happy that her vital work is being recognized. Read more »
