Famine Spreads in Somalia: You Can Help

The United Nations just declared famine in another three areas in Somalia, including the capital of Mogadishu.

The announcement means that thousands more people are at risk of starvation and death, and the number of refugees and people displaced from their homes will likely increase.

But you can help.

MADRE is working with Womankind Kenya to help refugees escaping the famine in Somalia. Everyday, over one thousand hungry, traumatized people are making their way across the border from Somalia into Kenya. Most have walked for hundreds of miles, with nothing to eat or drink. Our partners at Womankind Kenya told us that many girls and women were raped as they made the dangerous journey fleeing starvation. Womankind Kenya is working tirelessly to meet the urgent needs of these women and their families, but they can’t do it without your help.

Your donations will provide:

  • therapeutic, calorie-dense food
  • emergency water supplies
  • health kits with medicines to fight diarrhea and infections
  • oral rehydration salts
  • training to help mothers recognize the signs of malnutrition

The more generous you can be, the more lives we can save. Click here to donate.
