Farida Shaheed is the Coordinator of Shirkat Gah Women's Resource Centre in Lahore, Pakistan. She also works with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) International Solidarity Network. Farida is a sociologist with 25 years’ research experience on women’s issues (including rural development, women and labor), especially in Pakistan and South Asia. Her more recent work has explored the interface of women, culture, identity, and governance/state, with a particular focus on Islam and Muslim contexts. Recipient of the Second Annual Award for Women’s Human Rights (1997) and the Prime Minister’s Award (1989) for her book on the women’s movement in Pakistan, she led the Pakistan Beijing +5 NGO review process. As Shirkat Gah Coordinator, she developed and runs its (largest) legal consciousness program that seeks to change laws and policies while building grassroots capacity. She is completing a South Asian research project on violence against women.
