Eileen Mairena is an Indigenous Miskita from Nicaragua. An expert in sustainable development, she currently works at Nitlapan-UCA, a university-based Nicaraguan research institute. She studied Anthropology in the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (1993-1999), and has done post-graduate work which includes: Political Incidence at the Washington Office for Latin America (WOLA); Science, technology and society, and the contributions of gender analysis at the Latin America Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) – Organizations of American States (OAS) and UNESCO; and Socioeconomic and Gender Analysis, Economic Tools for the Formulations of Environmental Policies and Collective Action and Rural Development in Latin America and the Caribbean at the FODEPAL program of the FAO. She also received a Certificate in Sustainable Environmental Management from the University of California, Berkeley in July 2006.
