Director, Women, Gender and Justice Program at the United Nations Latin American Institute for Crime Prevention (ILANUD)

Alda Facio is a feminist human rights activist, jurist and writer. In September 1996, she was awarded the first Women’s Human Rights Award from International Women, Law and Development. She was one of the founders and the first Director of the Women’s Caucus for Gender Justice in the International Criminal Court. Since 1990, she has been the Director of the Women, Gender and Justice Program at the United Nations Latin American Institute for Crime Prevention (ILANUD) based in Costa Rica. Alda Facio has written hundreds of articles on feminist issues and women's human rights published in various sources, including FEMPRESS (a feminist Latin American news agency) for whom she was a correspondent for fourteen years. For the past three years, she has been a professor at the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica.
