MADRE Member Support is a Lifeline for Zarbobo
Posted on: Tuesday, July 6, 2010
I am so pleased to be able to tell you what an important difference MADRE members have made - support for the Afghan Women's Survival Fund was a lifeline for Zarbobo, a woman who lived in fear and hunger for twenty years before finally courageously escaping. She sent a note of thanks that I'm sharing below.
To all the members who made this possible, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for your commitment to women's human rights.
My name is Zarbobo. I am 40 years old. I have been married for 20 years—20 torturous years. My husband beat me everyday. Sometimes he didn't give me food. I was always hungry in his house.
My husband married a second wife and she was also very bad to me.
One day, my husband asked me to wear an explosive jacket and go to the bazaar and blow myself up. I couldn't do that. I didn't want to kill other people. So I said no. He became very angry and locked me in the animal pen. I lived there for two months. He gave me food only once a day.
After two months, I broke a window and ran away. The Human Rights commission sent me to Women for Afghan Women. I am happy at the shelter, but I miss my children. They are gone.
The women who run the shelter sent a report for the attorney general's office so they can arrest my husband.
I am told that your organization, MADRE, is paying for my expenses here at the shelter. I want to thank you for helping me. Thank you to everyone who is helping me.
