Fatima Ahmed of MADRE's Sudanese partner organization Zenab for Women in Development recently travelled to Doha, Qatar in order to participate in the peace process talks for Darfur.
Fatima is part of an initiative organized by Sisterhood for Peace to support the growth of a network of diverse Sudanese women committed to collaborating across boundaries of race, religion, ethnicity and geography to promote peace throughout all Sudan.
In late 2009, over 40 Sudanese women living in the United States and Canada began meeting to discuss the crisis in Darfur. They issued an urgent call for peace and began working to ensure that this round of talks in Doha comes to a successful conclusion. In late January of 2010, the team travelled to Doha in order to contribute to devising strategies for a viable peace agreement.
Fatima reported that the experience was truly amazing. The group was able to speak with most of the armed movements, as well as representatives from the Sudanese government. They also met with Mr. Bassole, the AU/UN Joint Chief Mediator and the Foreign Minister of Qatar.
