Stop Violence against Women Human Rights Defenders

Posted on: Thursday, September 8, 2011

Keywords: Women Human Rights Defenders, Combating Violence Against Women, Afghanistan, Iraq

One decade after the US government used women's rights as justification for the invasion, Afghanistan remains the most dangerous place on earth to be a woman. Those who fight for change are attacked – even assassinated by ultra-conservatives. Each woman who is killed is meant to serve as a warning to any other woman who dares to stand up for her rights. Still, activists like those who help operate MADRE's underground network continue to find the courage to do just that. That is why MADRE works, in Afghanistan and worldwide, to enable women who are threatened with violence to escape to safety.
