MADRE Mourns the Passing of Paul Newman

Posted on: Monday, September 29, 2008

Keywords: Activist

After decades of prominence in film, activism and philanthropy, Paul Newman died at the age of 83 last Friday, September 26. In 1982, he founded a food company, Newman's Own, which would go on to raise $250 million for progressive causes.

For more than twenty years, Newman's Own has supported MADRE's work to promote international women's human rights. Paul Newman and the Newman's Own Foundation provided funding for MADRE's on-the-ground projects for children and women—such as an art-education program for conflict-affected youth in Colombia or human rights trainings for women in Kenya—but that support did not end there. The Foundation also bolsters MADRE's work in public education and human rights advocacy through their general support.

MADRE celebrates Paul Newman's vision of progressive possibilities and his dedication to furthering a human rights agenda.
