MADRE Condemns the Assassinations of Syrian Civilians

Posted on: Thursday, February 9, 2012

Keywords: Syria, Middle East, Human Rights

Today, reports have revealed that over 110 people were killed in the latest attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces. MADRE condemns the violence and calls for an immediate halt.

The attacks took place in the city of Homs, a center of the opposition to his regime and where more than 200 people have been killed since last Friday.

This latest bloodshed comes after nearly one year of escalating government attempts to crush an uprising inspired by the region’s Arab Spring. These attacks have left thousands dead and have destroyed communities, leaving many without electricity and water. Still, President Assad continues to cling to power and engage in widespread, violent reprisals.

MADRE calls for the respect of the human rights of the Syrian people and an immediate end to the attacks against protesters and civilians.
