Event: Indigenous Women Working for Change and Moving Ahead since Beijing 1995

Join MADRE's partner organization, the International Indigenous Women's Forum (FIMI), for an event during CSW.



On 3 March, 2010, the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Women will co-sponsor, together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the International Indigenous Women's Forum (FIMI) the above side event at the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

The event will take place in conference room 7 of the UN Temporary North Lawn Building in New York at 1:15 to 2:30.


Moderator:
Elsa Stamatpoulou, Chief of the Secretariat for the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

Speakers:
Tarcila Rivera Zea, who is the executive director of Chirapaq, the Center for Indigenous Peoples' Cultures of Peru. Tarcila is a Quechuan activist who has worked for more than 25 years of her life to advocate and seek recognition of the rights of indigenous women and indigenous peoples.

Victoria Haraseb, who is regional education assistant to the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in South Africa. Victoria is an activist who has spent many years advocating for land rights, intellectual property rights and access to natural resources.

Govind Kelkar is Regional Programme Coordinator, Economic Security and Rights for the UNIFEM South Asia office in Delhi. Her work has focused on indigenous women’s issues, most recently in the field of climate change.

Megan Davis is a member of the Australian delegation to the CSW and is Director of the Indigenous Law Center at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Megan has ten years of experience in international indigenous advocacy at the UN. Meagan is a Cobble Cobble Aboriginal woman from South East Queensland and is also of South Sea Island descent.
