A Visit to Our Sister Organization in Haiti

Recently, MADRE staff was in Haiti to meet with our sister organization KOFAVIV. We used the opportunity to develop our work together and conducted a series of human rights trainings with Haitian grassroots women’s organizations. Plus our Helping Hands: Shoes for Haiti project delivered hundreds of pairs of shoes from generous MADRE supporters!

“Now I Have a New Mother – MADRE”

She knew that MADRE is made up of lots of people who care about girls like her. And knew that MADRE is Spanish for “mother.” She said to me, “My mother died in the earthquake. But now I have a new mother — MADRE. That’s what all the girls here need, a mother.”

Speaking Out for Haitian Women

Last week, when we were in Haiti, we were able to share an amazing opportunity with our partners at KOFAVIV. Invited by the fair trade organization Fairwinds Trading, Terry Lundgren (the CEO of Macy’s), Martha Stewart, and fashion designer Rachel Roy traveled to Haiti to meet with artisans and to see their work.

Distributing Shoes in Haiti

Thirteen-year-old Laurette lost her parents in last year’s earthquake. She is one of many girls living in danger in Haiti’s displacement camps. But a few months ago, she found a new home at the community center run by KOFAVIV, MADRE’s Haitian sister organization.
