Why Give?
"I can't imagine not working with MADRE, which has given me the community that fights loneliness, which has offered me a home in which to share my concerns with other women. I can't imagine not fighting that loneliness together, and I can't imagine not risking that loneliness."
– Susan Sarandon (MADRE member since 1988)
When you give to MADRE, you know you're making a concrete difference in the life of a woman who is struggling to build a better future for herself and her family.
Whether you're helping to build a clinic, feed a child, or deliver emergency aid after a disaster, you can feel confident that your gift will be used in a smart, efficient way. A full 89 cents of every dollar you give goes directly to programs like these:

In Kenya, young girls are at risk of gential mutilation and forced early marriage. And since girls are often the family water collectors, they face the threat of rape while they make the long trek to a fresh water source. When you donate to MADRE, you help support a school that gives girls a refuge from those abuses. And you make sure their school has clean, fresh water, so their safe haven can be a healthy one, too.
| In the slums of Guatemala City, women face epidemic levels of violence. In addition, many women have been forced into low-paying, high-risk jobs in maquilas (sweat shops). They face violence at work, at home and in the street. When you donate to MADRE, you give women a chance to make a life for themselves and their children. Your gift helps create community watch groups, and educate women on how to report sexual violence. It prrovides vocational training so women can have the skills to obtain less risky employment. It also provides reproductive health services for women who have no other form of health care. You and MADRE give women an alternative to violence and poverty. | The January 2010 earthquake in Haiti changed the lives of Haitian women forever. On its heels came not only mass homelessness, hurricanes and a deadly cholera outbreak, but also an epidemic of rape and sexual violence. With weak security forces and inadequate housing, women are constantly at risk of violation of their bodies and homes. When you donate to MADRE, you are helping Haitian women in ways large and small. Through our Helping Hands campaign, you help MADRE provide them with whistles and flashlights to keep themselves safe. You also support our Human Rights Advocacy program, ensuring that policy makers respond to women's needs and rights. |
