The Power of One: 2012 MADRE Membership Campaign
One year ago, I promised that if you helped us, we’d take giant steps forward for women’s human rights – and we have.
In Haiti, Iraq, Guatemala and beyond, women you supported through MADRE stood up to political bullies and confronted rapists. They became leaders in their homes and defied custom and corruption to assert their equality.
Your support was key to giving our sisters worldwide the courage to stand up to brutality and protect their communities. Your caring, their courage and MADRE were the forces behind it all.
And that is why I urge you to renew your 2012 membership with a tax-deductible gift today.
We’re calling this our “Power of One” Membership Campaign — because it’s really about you. It’s about the power you hold as one MADRE member. You’re not just a bystander to injustices against women and girls. You’re someone who stands up with women around the world, giving them your strength as they mobilize for change.
May I have your renewed commitment today, so that we can raise the $90,000 we need now to meet women’s urgent needs and sustain our momentum?
Some of our most pressing plans for 2012 include:
Support for Haitian girls forced into survival sex
The 2010 earthquake orphaned thousands of girls who now live alone in displacement camps. Many survive by exchanging sex for a meal or for a piece of soap to wash with and are exposed to life-threatening violence and health risks. At a MADRE-supported women’s center, girls find medical care, counseling and all the daily necessities that give them alternatives to survival sex.
Health care and humanitarian relief for Iraqi families
Women in the town of Haweeja see the consequences of the war every day in their children. The rate of severe birth
defects has skyrocketed since the US invasion. Mothers seeking answers have pointed to nearby toxic munitions dumps used by the US military. With our local partners, MADRE will help these families access health care, counseling and humanitarian relief.
Mobile clinics in famine-ravaged northern Kenya
After the worst drought in decades, malnutrition and other threats like cholera are spreading through refugee camps. Medical care is inadequate and often inaccessible. Working with our partners, MADRE is launching mobile clinics that reach families, including mothers desperate to save their children.
I urge you to renew your MADRE membership by joining our Power of One Campaign today.
Please renew your MADRE Membership for 2012 with a tax-deductible gift today, and you’ll see how the Power of One becomes the power of many, time and time again.
And that’s a promise.
Thank you,
