Maternal and Infant Mortality in Palestine
The Problem: Mothers and Infants Threatened by Occupation
In the West Bank, Palestinian women in labor are routinely denied access to necessary medical care by Israeli military checkpoints and roadblocks. Even women who are noticeably in need of urgent medical care are being forced to give birth in unsanitary conditions right at the military check points simply because the wait time is too long or they do not have the proper permits to pass.
UN agencies estimate that, every year, 2,500 Palestinian women face life-threatening or fatal difficulties due to Israeli army checkpoints that prevent or dangerously delay them from reaching hospitals.
The Solution: Training and Equipping Midwives
MADRE’s sister organization in Palestine, Midwives for Peace, is working to train and equip new midwives to help women safely deliver their children. Midwives for Peace is a grassroots group of both Palestinian and Israeli midwives reaching out across borders – despite political or religious rivalries – to come together to help women safely through the universal experience of childbirth.
However, these inspiring women need medical supplies to help women deliver their babies safely and comfortably. That is were you can help. MADRE is putting together Safe Birthing Kits, a kit of midwife-specific medical supplies that will improve the safety and quality of home childbirth.
With these kits, midwives can
- Reduce infant and maternal mortality by having sanitary medical equipment similar to hospitals
- Increase the health and well-being of the mother and child through personalized health-care before, during and after childbirth
- Have increased access to resources for training new midwives
- Encourage the continuation of Israeli and Palestinian women working together to save lives and improve maternal health
