Helping Hands: Shoes for Haiti
Imagine walking in her shoes. Let her walk in yours.
MADRE has launched a campaign to provide shoes for young women and girls living in displacement camps in Haiti.
Since the earthquake, rape and violence has drastically increased throughout the displacement camps. Our sister organization in Haiti, KOFAVIV, offers direct support to rape victims by providing peer counseling and individual therapy sessions, and by ensuring that women receive the medical care they need.
KOFAVIV has brought to our attention the pressing need for shoes. Without shoes many young girls in the camps are unable to walk to the KOFAVIV Women's Center in order to access the support, therapy and services that they urgently need. In addition, the lack of shoes exposes them to many other risks such as soil-transmitted diseases. Girls walking barefoot develop cuts and sores and run the risk of dangerous infections.
KOFAVIV told us a story about a group of girls who were sharing one pair of shoes among themselves, taking turns walking the distance to the supportive environment of the KOFAVIV Women’s Center. The girls without the shoes were left to wait until another day for their turn.
Take a moment to imagine walking in the shoes of a young girl in Haiti, and give her the joy and safety of walking in yours. Please donate a new or gently-used pair of shoes today.
